Being well protected when practising MX is very important. That is why we are comparing the two most sold MX boots in the market: the Fox Instinct and the Alpinestars Tech 10. Both are premium products, tested by the off-road professionals but with big differences on their construction.
Internal boot vs standard construction
Both boots represent the maximum technology on offroad boots. And the main difference is on their construction: the Alpinestars Tech 10 boots include an internal boot and the Fox Instinct do not.

The Alpinestars Tech 10's internal boot is called ‘Inner Ankle Brace System’. Its main purpose is to offer a biomechanical link area, that allows the ankle's movement but avoiding its torsion. So, the Alpinestars Tech 10 boots look for protection and mobility from its inside. On the Fox Instinct boots, we see a different way: we also find an antitorsion system, named 'Dynamic Core Stabilizer' but everything placed on the external area of the boot.

Both brands want to solve the same problem: the ankle's torsion, but on a different way. Their effectiveness on this matter is excellent and exactly the same on both boots, but it will be our job to choose if we prefer MX boot with or without an internal boot. There are users who preffer one or another option, but there is not a better boot on this way. For those who do not want an internal boot but want an Alpinestars product, the Italian brand offer the Tech 7 boots, very similar boots to the Tech 10 but with no internal boot.

Both boots feature advanced materials, but these are different and are placed on different areas as well. The Fox Instinct use a material called Duratac (an advanced rubber compound) placed in the sole and the internal side of the boot, offering grip and protection. On the other side, the Alpinestars Tech 10 use a double rubber compound on the sole, microfiber on the internal side of the boot and a TPU as ankle's external protection. On their internal areas, both boots use different materials, but always with the same purpose: to offer an excellent ventilation and antibacterial treatment textiles.

Regarding the weight, the Alpinestars Tech 10 boots weight 2.100 grams per boot, while the FOX Instinct boots are lighter: 1.800 grams each boot. Another difference between them is that Alpinestars offers a vented version of the Tech 10 boots, with microperforated leather and some orifices, for an increased ventilation.
Both brands entrust to the TPU on the main protection areas, that means the toecap, instep, heel and shank.

The only difference we find is on the ankle: on the Tech 10 boots the main protector is on the inner boot, so in the external area there is a smaller protection and there is only a TPU protector. On the other side, the Fox Instinct boots need a wider protector on their external area, according to give all the protection needed.

Both boots use the metallic closures and micrometric straps for their adjustment. There is only small differences regarding their disposal. On the Tech 10 there are three closures (the internal boot provides a better adjustment from the inside, so the three external closures are enough), while the Fox Instinct has four. The Alpinestars Tech 10 feature a wide Vlecro area for a better adjustment on the shank.

The main difference between the Fox Instinct and the Alpinestars Tech 10 boots is on their inside: the Tech 10 have internal boot and the Fox Instinct does not. And if we have to choose, this will be the main reason of our choice. Both boots have a wide range of colours.
